SAP ABAP Developer – Job Description

Overview

An SAP ABAP Developer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and supporting applications using ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming), the primary programming language of SAP ERP systems. The role involves working closely with functional consultants and business users to deliver customised SAP solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop custom programs, reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, and forms using ABAP
• Work on data dictionary objects such as tables, views, structures, and indexes
• Develop and maintain reports (ALV, classical, interactive)
• Create and enhance Smart Forms, SAP Scripts, and Adobe Forms
• Build and support interfaces (IDocs, BAPIs, RFCs, APIs)
• Perform performance tuning and debugging of ABAP programs
• Work on enhancements like user exits, BAdIs, and enhancement framework
• Collaborate with functional teams (FI, MM, SD, etc.) to translate business requirements into technical solutions
• Conduct unit testing, integration testing, and support UAT (User Acceptance Testing)
• Provide production support and resolve issues in a timely manner
• Maintain technical documentation and follow development standards

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
• Strong knowledge of ABAP programming concepts (reports, modules, OO ABAP)
• Experience with SAP modules such as FI, MM, SD, or HR
• Hands-on experience with:
  • Data Dictionary (DDIC)
  • ALV reporting
  • Enhancements (User exits, BAdIs)
  • Forms (Smart Forms / Adobe Forms)
• Understanding of SAP system architecture
• Experience in debugging and performance optimisation
• Familiarity with SAP integration technologies (IDocs, BAPIs, RFCs)
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

Preferred Skills

• Experience with S/4HANA and ABAP on HANA
• Knowledge of CDS Views, AMDP, and OData services
• Exposure to SAP Fiori/UI5
• Experience with SAP workflow or integration tools
