Lead Business Analyst – Position Description
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead Business Analyst to lead and manage all business analysis activities for a complex enterprise software development project. The Lead BA will oversee a team of Business Analysts while serving as the primary liaison between technical development teams and business stakeholders. This role is critical in ensuring that all project requirements are captured, understood, prioritized, and successfully translated into technical specifications and deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Management

Lead BA Team: Direct and mentor a team of Business Analysts throughout all project phases, providing guidance on best practices, methodologies, and quality standards

Stakeholder Alignment: Act as the primary conduit between business stakeholders and technical teams, ensuring clear communication and mutual understanding of requirements and constraints

Requirements Governance: Establish and enforce standards for requirements documentation, change management, and quality assurance across the BA function

Team Development: Conduct regular one-on-ones, performance evaluations, and provide coaching to develop BA team competencies and career growth
Requirements Analysis & Management

Requirements Elicitation: Lead comprehensive requirements gathering sessions with business stakeholders, subject matter experts, and end-users across multiple departments and functional areas

Functional Specification Development: Author detailed functional requirements documents (FRD) and use cases that clearly define system behavior, business rules, and acceptance criteria

Requirements Documentation: Establish templates, standards, and documentation practices that ensure clarity, traceability, and consistency across all requirements artifacts

Requirement Prioritization: Work with stakeholders to prioritize features and requirements based on business value, complexity, dependencies, and delivery timelines

Traceability Management: Maintain comprehensive requirements traceability matrices (RTM) to track requirements from conception through development, testing, and deployment

Impact Analysis: Assess the impact of requirement changes on scope, timeline, cost, and technical architecture; communicate trade-offs to stakeholders
Process & Workflow Design

Business Process Mapping: Document current-state and future-state business processes; identify improvement opportunities and optimization points

Workflow Configuration: Collaborate with technical architects to design configurable workflows that support complex business scenarios and edge cases

Data Mapping & Transformation: Define data mapping rules and transformation logic between legacy and new systems; ensure data integrity throughout migration processes

Integration Requirements: Define integration points with third-party systems and legacy applications; document API requirements, data exchanges, and synchronization needs

Rules & Constraints: Codify business rules, compliance requirements, and operational constraints into functional specifications for development
Quality Assurance & Validation

Requirements Review: Conduct thorough reviews of requirements documentation to identify gaps, ambiguities, conflicts, or inconsistencies

UAT Preparation: Define user acceptance testing (UAT) strategies, test scenarios, and acceptance criteria; prepare UAT documentation and test scripts

UAT Execution: Oversee UAT activities; facilitate testing sessions with end-users; document defects and issues; recommend resolutions

Sign-Off & Approval: Obtain formal approval and sign-off from business stakeholders on requirements and deliverables; manage approval workflows

Quality Metrics: Establish metrics to track requirements quality, requirement volatility, and defect rates; use data to drive continuous improvement
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

Regular Stakeholder Meetings: Organize and facilitate sprint ceremonies, backlog grooming sessions, requirement review meetings, and steering committee briefings

Clear Communication: Prepare executive summaries, status reports, and presentations that communicate project progress, risks, issues, and recommendations to leadership

Expectation Management: Ensure stakeholders have realistic expectations about scope, timeline, capabilities, and trade-offs; proactively manage scope creep

Feedback Integration: Gather feedback from end-users, SMEs, and stakeholders; integrate constructive feedback into requirements and processes

Change Request Coordination: Evaluate and communicate the impact of proposed changes through formal change management processes
Cross-functional Collaboration

Technical Partnership: Work closely with Solution Architects, Technical Leads, and Development teams to ensure requirements are technically feasible and well-understood

Design Collaboration: Partner with UI/UX designers to validate that designs support functional requirements and user needs

QA Partnership: Collaborate with QA leads on test planning, test case development, and defect resolution strategies

Project Management Alignment: Work with Project Managers to ensure BA deliverables align with project milestones, dependencies, and timelines
Project Phases
The Lead BA will be actively involved throughout the following project phases:

Discovery Phase: Lead requirements elicitation, current-state analysis, and preliminary system design

Development Phase: Refine requirements, provide clarifications to development teams, manage requirement changes, prepare UAT documentation

Testing & UAT Phase: Oversee user acceptance testing, coordinate defect resolution, prepare for production deployment

Post-Deployment Support: Support production stabilization and prepare documentation for operational handoff
Required Qualifications
Education & Certification

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field

Certification in Business Analysis (IIBA CBAP, ECBA, or equivalent) strongly preferred

Project Management certification (PMP, PRINCE2) is a plus
Experience

Minimum 8+ years of professional business analysis experience in enterprise software development projects

Minimum 4+ years of experience leading or supervising a team of analysts

Proven experience with complex, multi-stakeholder projects involving significant scope and integration requirements

Experience in case management, criminal justice systems, public sector, healthcare, or regulated industries is a strong plus

Track record of successfully managing requirements for enterprise platforms with multiple user personas

Experience with data migration projects and legacy system integration

Familiarity with AI/ML-powered features, natural language processing, or advanced analytics is beneficial

Process Improvement: Knowledge of business process optimization, workflow design, and operational efficiency best practices
Technical Knowledge

Working knowledge of relational databases and data schemas

Understanding of system architecture, integration patterns, and API concepts

Familiarity with development methodologies (Agile, Scrum, Waterfall, or hybrid approaches)

Comfort with tools used for requirements management, documentation, and project tracking (JIRA, Azure DevOps, Confluence, or similar)

Basic understanding of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) and hosting considerations

Knowledge of data migration, ETL processes, and data transformation is beneficial
